Many fans of the popular Frozen series are curious as to what will come in the future. Will Elsa ever return to Arendelle? Will Anna and Kristoff get married? Will Prince Hans return? Will Elsa turn evil?
Earlier this month it was announced through Bob Iger himself that the next installment of the Frozen series, Frozen III (which was announced shortly after his return as CEO) wouldn’t be the only Frozen film in development and hinted as a Frozen IV. This of course confused many as they hadn’t even shown off any developments of the third film yet.
However, a recent interview with Disney Animation head and Frozen co-creator Jennifer Lee may give us a possible indication of what may be going on behind the curtain. When asked about the current state of the third film, she said:
“Only what we have already shared, which is the team is hard at work, we are deeply excited about the story we are shaping together, and it’s so epic it may not fit into just one film.“
This indicates that the third and fourth films may be connected narratively and may even be a two-parter. The idea of having a series’ finale being a two-parter was popularized with the Harry Potter series when the seventh story, The Deathly Hallows, was split into a seventh and eighth film.
Soon other film series like Twilight with Breaking Dawn and The Hunger Games with Mockingjay were split into two parts. At one point, even Marvel’s The Avengers would call the third and fourth Avengers films Infinity Wars Part I and Part II.
However, it is too early to know if this will indeed be the path. Even if they were to make it a two-parter, it isn’t certain it would ever be completed. Famously, the final Divergent film was split into two parts, but its box office was so bad that the Part II was canceled.
Disney’s current box office track record may insinuate Frozen‘s box office potential may not be as strong as it used to be. With Iger’s reliance on making sequels, there is a chance some audiences may turn away. Only time will tell.
What do you think? Will Frozen 3 & 4 be a two-parter? Should Disney keep making Frozen sequels? Or should Disney just let it go?
