It’s a Small World is an incredibly popular attraction at Disney Parks. Based on the original ride for he 1964 World’s Fair, all but the California Disneyland versions are copies. However, both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World rides have some creepy things in common. One of the creepiest fact to many is that the dolls need haircuts because their hair “grows.”
Just when you thought you couldn’t be more creeped out by the dolls, now you know their hair grows too? How?

Yes, the doll animatronics on the “It’s a Small World” ride have to have yearly haircuts because their yarn hair “grows.”
The yarn stretches out over time due to humidity from the water in the attraction, making it “grow.” Because of this issue, the animatronics do receive haircuts at least once a year to combat an unkept look.
This fact does not make them alive, even though I wouldn’t want to be trapped in that ride with the lights off.
Which brings me to another interesting fact. The animatronics still move at night.
While the ride, lights, and music are shut off at night, the animatronics reportedly keep moving. It seems shutting them down can cause issues where they may not restart properly, so they are simply left on.
Picture this in your mind: the sounds of motors, clicking, and clacking, with no other music, lights, or sounds, is ridiculously creepy. I get the chills just thinking about it.
The creepiness of the dolls led an author to make them come to life in a book.

In “The Kingdom Keepers” book series by author Ridley Pearson, the “It’s A Small World” animatronics come to life and swim through the water to attack people in the boat.
This appeared in the first book of the series, “Disney After Dark.” Five teens are “trapped” in Walt Disney World. You can read it for free on Kindle.
Five young teens tapped as models for theme park “guides” (using a new hologram technology developed by the Disney Imagineers) find themselves pitted against Disney villains and witches that threaten both the future of Walt Disney World and the stability of the world outside its walls.
People pee in the water.
Like “Pirates of the Caribbean,” there have been many tales of people relieving themselves in the water.
Reddit – “The people in front of us in line for It’s a Small World held their toddler up, striped her down, sat her on the railing, and let her pee into the water the boats all float on. Then, to top it off, the mom used Kleenex from Nana’s purse to wipe the kid’s butt and then threw that in the water, too.“
I think taking a black light and scanning the boat might be a scary experience.
Should you be scared?
While the attraction is meant to be a non-threatening, family-friendly boat ride about world unity, it creeps a lot of people out. The incessant song repeated over and over, along with the unintended creepiness of the dolls, puts people off. But it is safe for children to ride, just don’t pee in the water.
