Is “Moana” a Cash Grab? The Internet Thinks So

Disney released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming live-action “Moana” film releasing next summer. While the trailer looks good, many on the internet are asking why we need a live-action “Moana” just ten years since the release of the animated film.

It’s a valid question. Disney recently was shelving a lot of their live-action remakes after the recent underperformance (due to overspending) of “The Little Mermaid” and the flat out bomb that was “Snow White.”  As soon as “Lilo & Stitch” did well Disney announced that the “Tangled” live-action film was back in play.

Many feel that Disney CEO Bob Iger is just using these films as a lazy cash grab.

“Cash grab is a cash grab…animated Moana is fantastic but I hope this fails.”  – Mandolango

It’s embarrassing how the Disney company cant come up with any new original ideas.  Just gotta turn all your movies into “live action” and milk established names” – Sic Nik

As a huge fan of the original- who asked for this? The original came out like. Decade ago” -CauliWobbles

Is there literally nothing else that could be filmed? This looks exactly like the first one ..” -VERONIKA

Why tf we remaking this? The animated version of just fine“-YAMI MORETTI

“Another pointless remake nobody asked for. I’ll stick with the animated version.” -Beth Baisch

“I’m struggling with the label of “live action” when so much of this is obviously CGI. (What happened to putting some distance between animation and its remake? Didn’t ‘Moana’ just come out a few years ago?)” – MsM

What inspired you to make a live-action Moana despite the original animated one not being a decade old yet?
Bob Iger: “Money.” – RuffRuffman

“I love moana. One of the better recent Disney movies…..but what is the need to make shot for shot live action versions? Besides a cash grab…..just be disney. Do live action. Do animation. Stop with the remakes and be original.” -Rob

There are many more comments and they are probably right. However, if people are excited and go it will make a lot of money and that is what Disney cares about. They are a corporation and Bob Iger’s job is to make the investors money.

Disney’s focus is now on profitability and higher revenue per user (RPU).

I do think this film will be a box office success, even if it’s recycled.
