Currently, you can buy the film on digital for $29.99 on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

Or you can rent the film for $24.99.

Is it worth the cost?

Frankly, no.

I enjoyed Elio and gave it a pretty good review, but the film is not worth paying $24.99 to rent for two days or even $29.99 to buy, unless you plan on watching it a bunch of times.

If you loved it, then by all means purchase it, but for most, you are better off waiting for Disney+.

Since Disney wants to get as much money as possible from the film, they are likely holding off on announcing the Disney+ release date. Probably hoping people will simply rent or buy the film.

When will Elio be on Disney Plus?

We do not have a date at this time, but it will likely be released sometime in September or early October.

After the physical media release because Disney wants to recoup as much money as possible. Which is understandable.

If you can’t wait until then, physical media will be released on September 9.

You can pre-order the DVD and Blu-ray now. For the same cost as the rental you can get the physical disk with digital copy.

Walmart has them listed for $19.99 (DVD) and $24.99 (Blu-ray/DVD/Digital)

How did Elio do in theaters?

The film only did about $72.9 million domestically and about $150.6 million globally on an estimated budget of  $150 million, with some estimates going up to $300 million. Meaning the film needed to make at least $300 million to break even and it didn’t.

You decide what you would like to do. Personally, I would wait for Disney+ or purchase the physical media copy. It really isn’t worth the cost of renting when you can own it for less in a couple of weeks or stream it with your Disney+ subscription soon.
