Inside Out 2 Stomps Super Mario Bros. At The World Box Office

Pixar’s streak of box office disappointments has ended, for now at least, as their latest film, Inside Out 2, has surpassed one of 2023’s biggest animated films, The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination and Universal.

Inside Out 2, the sequel to the 2015 hit Inside Out, has set the record to not only become Pixar’s highest-grossing film of all time but now the third-highest-grossing animated film of all time, just behind Frozen II and the 2019 remake of The Lion King.

As of right now, Inside Out 2 has earned $1.389 Billion at the global box office, stomping on the Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s $1.362 Billion. However, it should be noted that Inside Out 2 had a budget of $200 Million while The Super Mario Bros. Movie had only a $100 Million budget.

Current Top Five Highest-Grossing Animated Movies:

The Lion King (2019) $1.663 Billion
Frozen II (2019) $1.454 Billion
Inside Out 2 (2024) $1.389 Billion
The Super Marion Bros. Movie (2023) $1.362 Billion
Frozen (2013) $1.29 Billion

Interestingly enough, Inside Out 2 is only $65 million short of matching Frozen II‘s historical box office record. If the film still does well in the coming weeks, it might become Disney’s highest-grossing traditional animated movie of all time. “Traditional” in the sense that it is aesthetically animated, while the 2019 remake of The Lion King goes for a photorealistic look.

The success of Inside Out 2 should show Disney/Pixar that audiences still want to see their movies, but only if they are of good quality. Many of Disney’s recent animated films have underperformed over the past few years and lost money. Hopefully, they will course correct after this.

But this could be a double edged sword, as Disney could also see this as a reason to just make sequels to already popular movies and not try new things. Only time will tell.
