Over the past few years, Pixar has seen some rather dark days. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused their film for that year, Onward, to be pulled from theaters early, leading to it flopping at the box office. Their following three releases, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red, were all released directly to streaming to supplement the recently launched Disney+ service. In 2022, they returned to theaters with Lightyear, which burned up on impact at the box office. Then 2023’s Elemental, while not a flop, was a disappointment to many.
But now the studio seems to have its mojo back, with Inside Out 2 breaking multiple box office records from being Disney’s most successful animated film since the pandemic to their most successful Pixar movie to their most successful traditionally animated movie of all time. Now, after an extended theatrical run, has dethroned the 2019 remake of The Lion King and is now the highest-grossing “animated” movie of all time.
As of the writing of this article, the movie has made $1.667 billion worldwide against a $200 million budget. The 2019 remake of The Lion King, a photorealistic animated feature, made $1.656 billion worldwide. Now “Inside Out 2” holds the ninth highest-grossing movie of all time, just below 2015’s Jurassic World, which made $1.671 Billion, a number Inside Out 2 might just pass.
Despite the film releasing on digital on August 20th people are still going to the theaters to see it. This extended theatrical release is most likely what lead to its eventual record setting number. However it will most likely leave theaters soon as the physical DVD, BluRay and 4K Ultra HD release is set for September 10th.
What do you think? Is Inside Out 2 deserving of such a box office record? Or do you think it is overhyped? Let us know your thoughts.
