IMAX has just announced that they will be cutting the original three-week run for Disney’s “Star Wars” film “The Mandalorian and Grogu” to show “Masters of the Universe” instead.
Is this true?
Some people are saying they were going to IMAX for Masters of the Universe and had tickets before this announcement. Other outlets are saying it’s a change.
Here is the announcement.

IF they did end ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ run early it could be for a couple of reasons
1. Payback For Disney’s Infinity Vision

Disney wasn’t given the IMAX slot for “Avengers: Doomsday” because it’s opening against “Dune Part 3” which already had a deal with the big theater chain. In response (or retaliation) Disney announced their new “Infinity Vision” certification at Cinema Con.
Basically, they will certify theaters that have or upgrade to a minimum screen size of 50 feet, offer laser projection, and Dolby 7.1 or equivalent sound. I’m sure their “certification” comes with a price tag as well.
Disney doesn’t spend any money but controls a label for theaters to try and compete with IMAX.
It’s likely IMAX wasn’t happy with Disney’s plan, and they could be booting ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu” early as a result.
2. ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Won’t Perform Well Enough In Theaters

Another possibility is that “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is already falling off a cliff at the theater, and by next weekend it will get buried by “Masters of the Universe” and “Scary Movie 6”. IMAX likely wants to make money, and “Masters of the Universe” could be a better bet for them.
‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ is already down to third place in its second weekend, being beaten by two horror films–‘Obsession’ and ‘Backrooms’.
Again, this is “IF”, but I have several people telling me they had tickets to see “Masters of the Universe” in IMAX before this was announced. I am thinking this was always the plan and had nothing to do with the “Star Wars” film. But it’s circulating.
Will this bump up the box office estimates for ‘Masters of the Universe’?
‘Masters of the Universe’ was only tracking for a $35 million domestic opening weekend. While it has been increasing, it wasn’t enough to be a huge opener. Maybe with IMAX stepping in earlier than expected, this could give those numbers a boost?
The budget for ‘Masters of the Universe’ is estimated to be around $170 million. Marketing for this film has been well done and likely expensive, meaning the film will probably need $400 million to break even. $35 million is not nearly enough, so hopefully this announcement gives that a boost.
