Hot Wheels Racer Series brick cars start at $4.99 in January

Mattel Brick Shop’s new Racer Series packs 27 to 29 bricks into a car the size of a regular Hot Wheels, with metal axles that actually roll. Six launch in January 2027 from $4.99 each.

Hot Wheels is shrinking its brick cars back down to Hot Wheels size. The new Mattel Brick Shop Hot Wheels Racer Series turns 1:64 scale cars into building kits starting at $4.99 each, beginning in January 2027.

Mattel announced the line Nov. 4. Each car takes 27 to 29 pieces and rolls on metal axles when you’re done, the company said. Six cars come first, and Mattel plans 20 by the end of 2027.

Our math: all six at the suggested price come to $29.94 before tax. The 1:32 Speed Series kits that launched Brick Shop in 2025 ran about $20 for one car, GTPlanet reported. Mattel’s own store lists the Speed Series Maserati MC20 at $22.

Motor1 summed it up in its Nov. 7 headline: “Lego Has Competition.” Mattel is going after a building-toy market Lego dominates, Motor1 wrote.

Here’s a closer look at the 2027 Racer Series from Diecast Wheels:

Which cars are in Hot Wheels Racer Series 1?

Six, with piece counts from Mattel:

  • ’24 Camaro ZL1: 29 pieces

  • ’18 Audi TT RS: 29 pieces

  • Maserati MCPura: 27 pieces

  • ’91 Acura NSX: 29 pieces

  • ’99 Honda S2000: 29 pieces

  • Bone Shaker: 28 pieces

The Bone Shaker is the wild card. It’s an original Hot Wheels design, not a real car, and it’s the one with a skull on the grille. Every set needs a little chaos.

What comes in a Hot Wheels Racer Series kit?

According to Mattel, each one includes:

  • A metal base plate, so it has some Hot Wheels heft

  • Metal axles and rolling wheels that actually work

  • Rubber-like tires

  • Custom pieces shaped to match each car’s lines

  • Step-by-step instructions

The resin bricks snap together, and the kits are rated for ages 6 and up. Autoevolution, which posted photos of the cars Nov. 1, before Mattel’s announcement, said they come in blister packs with paper instructions and take minutes to build.

Ted Wu, Mattel’s general manager and global head of vehicles and building sets, said the result feels “distinctly Mattel Brick Shop” and unmistakably Hot Wheels.

When and where can you buy the Hot Wheels Racer Series?

January 2027. Mattel hasn’t named a specific date or which stores will carry them. Its announcement sends fans to MattelBrickShop.com for updates.

That timing matters if you’re holiday shopping. These won’t make it into stockings this year. Santa’s workshop is fast, but not “unreleased product” fast.

If you want a Brick Shop gift this year, you’ll need one of the bigger kits, and some are already gone. Mattel’s store listed the $22 Maserati MC20 as sold out Sunday.

How is Racer Series different from other Mattel Brick Shop sets?

Size and price. Mattel launched Brick Shop in 2025 with three bigger lines, GTPlanet reported:

  • Speed Series (1:32): about $20, with 236 to 289 pieces

  • Elite Series (1:16): about $45, with 858 to 918 pieces

  • Premium Series (1:12): a 1,200-piece Mercedes-Benz 300SL for about $137

Those kits came with a regular die-cast Hot Wheels car to park next to your build. The Racer Series skips that step. The brick car is the Hot Wheels car.

Will there be more Hot Wheels Racer Series cars?

Yes. Mattel says the lineup grows to 20 by the end of 2027, but it hasn’t named the other 14.

Autoevolution reported that the S2000 is No. 5 of 20 in the series, which hints at a numbered set collectors will want to finish. Hot Wheels has sold tiny cars since 1968. Now it wants you to build them, too, one $4.99 blister pack at a time.
