A lot of fans were concerned when the rumor started circulating. Most fans want to see the famous ship restored or repurposed and not destroyed.
Why is the boat backstage?
Disney recently shut down the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island to build a new Cars-themed area at the Magic Kingdom. As a result, both the Tom Sawyer transport rafts and the Liberty Belle were moved from the river to backstage areas.
Now the water is being drained from the Rivers of America ahead of demolition.

What is replacing the Liberty Belle and Rivers of America?
The new Piston Peak National Park, inspired by the Cars franchise, will be replacing all the attractions in the area of Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America up to the Frontierland walkway, according to a concept art image released by Disney.

What will happen to the Liberty Belle?
This we do not yet know.
What Disney plans on doing with the famous ship is unclear. We do know that it is still safe and in one piece thanks to @bioreconstruct.
