The latest Marvel blockbuster, Deadpool & Wolverine, has become one of the highest grossing R-rated movies of all time, surpassing $1 billion at the box office. The movie serves as a finale to the long-running X-Men franchise, which was originally started in 2000 at 20th Century Fox. Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine team up for one last ride to save the multiverse.
In the film, multiple actors who portrayed Marvel characters pre-MCU returned to play their iconic roles, presumably for the last time. Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, Dafne Keen’s X-23, and Chris Evans’ Human Torch all made appearances.
Unfortunately, some fans felt let down. Most likely, due to budgetary reasons, they could only have a certain number of Marvel alumni in the film. Many were hoping for some out-there returns like Nicholas Cage as Ghost Rider, Thomas Jane as Punisher, Eric Bana as Hulk, Matt Salinger as Captain America, and David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury.
One name that many were also hoping to see was fellow X-Men alumni Halle Berry as Storm. Storm’s character was extremely popular in the comics, to the point where she eventually became the leader of the X-Men. She played a significant role in the mainline X-Men films, and Berry portrayed the character four times on screen.
Next to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Berry was one of the most popular of the original X-Men actors. In fact, multiple times in the original movies, it was hinted at that Wolverine and Storm had an attraction for each other, with a deleted scene in Days of Future Past showing the two embrace with a kiss. The two have a history as a couple in the comics, even having a daughter named Torrent.
Many had hoped that Berry would return as Storm in the MCU at some point. In fact, it had been rumored multiple times that she would return, both in Doctor Strange 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. Well, it turns out that she could have returned, as she was fully open to reprising her iconic role.
In a recent interview with comicbook.com when asked if she had been approached to return as Storm in the new movie she said:
“No. Blake Lively asked me one time, I ran into her at a Marc Jacobs fashion show, and she said, ‘Would you ever be in my husband’s movie as Storm?’ I said, ‘Yeah, if he asked me,’ but he never asked me.“
The decision was most likely due to a limit on how many people they could ask back for the film. It is a real missed opportunity, as we not only could have seen Storm wreak havoc on the bad guys during the attack on Cassandra’s fortress but also may have gotten a payoff between the Wolverine-Storm romance.
What do you think? Should Ryan Reynolds have asked Halle Berry to play Storm once more? Or is it best that her variant be left in the multiverse? Let us know your thoughts.
