Guest Dies From Blunt Force Trauma Riding Stardust Racers at Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe

A tragic incident has been reported at Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe, where a guest died after riding the park’s flagship roller coaster, Stardust Racers.

What happened?

On Wednesday night, Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, 32, became unresponsive while on Stardust Racers, Epic Universe’s largest thrill ride. Park officials confirmed that Zavala was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

How did he die?

An autopsy released Thursday determined that Zavala’s death was accidental and caused by “multiple blunt impact injuries,” according to Spectrum News 13.

What is Stardust Racers?

Stardust Racers is Epic Universe’s signature attraction. Known for its dual-track launch system, the ride allows two trains to race side by side, at times intertwining along the 5,000-foot course. The coaster reaches speeds of 62 mph and climbs to 133 feet, making it the longest roller coaster Universal has ever built.

Universal’s Statement

Universal Orlando issued a statement expressing condolences and confirming its cooperation with the investigation led by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

“The guest became unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers and was transported to the hospital, where the guest later died. We are devastated by this event and extend our sincerest sympathies to the guest’s loved ones. We are fully committed to cooperating with this ongoing investigation. The attraction remains closed.”

Past Ride Incidents

This marks the first reported death at Epic Universe since its opening in May 2025. However, the Florida Department of Agriculture has documented two prior health-related incidents on Stardust Racers.

  • In June, a 63-year-old man reported dizziness and an altered state of consciousness, attributed to a pre-existing condition.
  • In a separate case, a 43-year-old woman reported visual disturbances and numbness, also linked to a pre-existing condition.

Stardust Racers remains closed pending the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not provided a timeline for its reopening.
