What happened at Six Flags Over Georgia?

Officials haven’t said yet. Police confirmed one death and said several other people were hurt, but they didn’t immediately release more details.

Witnesses told WXIA they saw a man come out of his seat on Goliath and fall from the ride. They said he was riding with his son.

Police and the park haven’t confirmed those accounts.

Goliath stopped mid-ride after the incident. Video showed emergency crews helping riders climb out of the trains and walk down a staircase from high on the track, according to Fox News.

Atlanta outlet Rough Draft Atlanta reported that four people were injured. Officials haven’t shared their conditions.

What did Six Flags say about the Goliath incident?

The park said it is supporting the guests and team members who were affected.

“We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today,” a Six Flags spokesperson said.

The park said it is cooperating fully with local authorities. It isn’t releasing more details “out of respect for the family’s privacy.”

Officials haven’t released the man’s name.

Who is investigating the Six Flags Over Georgia death?

Cobb County Police are leading the investigation, according to NBC News.

The city of Mableton, where the park is located, said its public safety director, Dr. Kerry Stallings, is working with Cobb County Police and park security, Rough Draft Atlanta reported.

There’s no word yet on what caused the incident or when Goliath will reopen.

What is the Goliath roller coaster?

It’s one of the park’s biggest rides. Goliath is a steel hyper coaster built by Swiss ride maker Bolliger & Mabillard, and it opened in 2006, according to NBC News.

The ride climbs to 200 feet and reaches speeds of about 70 mph, according to the park’s website, as reported by Fox News. Its first drop is 170 feet.

A hyper coaster is a roller coaster with a height or drop of at least 200 feet. They’re known for big hills and moments of “airtime,” when riders lift out of their seats against their lap bars.

Where is Six Flags Over Georgia?

It’s in Cobb County, about 10 miles west of downtown Atlanta. The park opened in 1967 and is one of the oldest in the Six Flags chain.

Monday was a holiday for many people, with schools and some offices closed for Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Has Six Flags had other ride problems this year?

Yes, at a different park. In September, Six Flags was named in several lawsuits from riders who say they suffered brain injuries on the X2 roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California, NBC News reported.

That ride has been closed since July 12. The park said at the time that it doesn’t comment on pending lawsuits.

There’s no known connection between that case and Monday’s incident in Georgia.

This is a developing story, and details may change as police release more information.
