The Golden Girls, a well loved and well remembered sitcom about four older women all living together in a house dealing with the fact that they are old but all share a special bond of friendship, is coming to Disney Plus… But only in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The sitcom, staring Beatrice Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty and Betty White, ended over 30 years ago, so you missed out on it when it was new, but now you can watch all 180 Episodes on Disney Plus’ “Star” in the UK and Ireland.
This is a similar situation to the story where The Walking Dead would appear on Disney Plus in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and it’s the same reason here. Disney has slowly been shutting down a number of its international television channels and making way for Disney Plus to be the only place to watch Disney Owned Shows and Movies. The Golden Girls are already on Disney Plus in North America but do still air on television here, but the channels who run it in the UK and Ireland will be closing down. So all the shows that run on their networks overseas, on stations like ABC, The Disney Channel, Freefrom and the various FOX channels, will be moving to Disney’s international streaming services.
