It has been a busy week for George Stephanopoulos. First, Disney decided to settle a defamation lawsuit with Donald Trump over comments made by Stephanopoulos earlier this year, and now the ABC news anchor has gotten a new contract with the network.
What did George Stephanopoulos do?
Back in March, he had an interview with Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) where he reportedly said that the former president was found liable by a jury for “rape.” This was not true; he was found liable for “sexual assault” by the definitions in the law in New York.
Apparently, the anchor used the term “rape” regarding Donald Trump several times.
According to sources at the NY Post, Stephanopoulos was told not to say it.
“This Week’ producer said ‘don’t use the word rape’ before the segment started,” a network source told The Post. “The EP [executive producer] said it so many times.”
A second source at the show confirmed via a text message viewed by The Post that Stephanopoulos was warned “not to say rape.”
As a result, Disney agreed to donate $15 million to the Trump presidential foundation and library and $1 million to the incoming president’s legal fees to settle the case. Stephanopoulos also had to issue an apology.
This led to many questioning his place at ABC.
Now he has a new contract.
An ABC spokesperson has announced that the “Good Morning America” news anchor has signed a new multi-year agreement.
We don’t know the details, whether he was given new guidelines, or whether he was paid more or less than before. We only know his contract was renewed.
This news comes after other ABC staffers and news outlets questioned Disney’s decision to settle with Donald Trump.
Now, we know that George Stephanopoulos will be staying at the network for the foreseeable future.
