Gael García Bernal To Star In A 2022 Werewolf By Night Halloween Special

With Halloween just ending this year we have some more spooky news as Mexican born actor Gale García Bernal, known for playing Héctor in Pixar’s 2017 film Coco will portray the classic horror themed Marvel character Werewolf By Night in an upcoming Disney Plus Special scheduled for 2022.

The original Werewolf By Night was named Jack Russell. He was introduced in Marvel Spotlight #2 in 1972 and created by Roy Thomas, Jeanie Thomas, Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog.

His ancestor, Grigori Russoff, was bitten by a werewolf in after seeking revenge against Dracula for killing his wife. Later he read from the legendary Darkhold Scrolls and from that awakened the werewolf inside. This eventually spread to his descendants, and on his 18th birthday Jack Russell would turn into a werewolf all 3 nights of the full moon each month.

The second Werewolf By Night is Jake Gomez, the version that Gael García Bernal will be playing. He first appeared in Werewolf By Night #1 in 2020. His story is that when he was 13 he fell victim to a family curse that his Hopi Native American ancestors carried.

The character is one of Marvel’s more well known classical horror based characters, along with Morbius the Vampire anti-hero.

Not much is known about what the special will contain nor is it said how it will connect to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it will be something interesting to see come Halloween 2022.
