Flavors of Florida Review: B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co.’s Ybor City Cuban Dog

Just before you cross the bridge to get to Swirls on the Water, B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co. is stationed right there, enticing guests with the distinctive aroma of sausages and hot dogs. But how did this small eatery do at this year’s Flavors of Florida event?

Cuban sandwiches were everywhere at Disney Springs. I’m not sure if it was by chance or if someone at Disney is a fellow Tampa native like myself, but seeing so many places offering this particular item was a little odd. I’m not complaining because seeing how sit-downs and food stands prepare this sandwich style is interesting.

Now, this is how you take a Cuban sandwich and improve it! Unlike the bland Tampa-style one we sampled at Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’, B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co. packed a ton of flavor into a tiny package.

Look at that melted Swiss cheese! It’s so simple to get a Cuban sandwich-themed food right. All B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co. needed was a “quarter pound all-beef hot dog, mojo pork, pickles, Swiss cheese and mustard.”

Yes, we could taste the mustard and the moist mojo pork this time. I never thought adding a hot dog could improve a Cuban, but wow.

The salty dog was a nice kick I didn’t know I wanted as part of my go-to lunch item until now. I may have to keep a couple of Franks in my fridge at work so that I can add them next time I bring in a Cuban sandwich.

From taste to presentation, B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co. knocked this one out of the park—err, Disney Springs. I hope the Ybor City Cuban Dog is added to the menu year-round!

The only downside is the lack of shade and seating throughout Disney Springs. That’s not a knock against B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co., but just a general observation.
