UPDATE: We found the full Zootopia: Hot Pursuit ride video thanks to Theme Park 101. See below!
In October, we covered a preview of Shanghai Disney’s upcoming Zootopia area. One of the most interesting new additions was a dark ride called Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, featuring trackless vehicles.
Thanks to Theme Park Insider and Shine, we were able to see the first POV ride-through of the upcoming ride! The ride acts as a sequel to the events of Disney’s 2016 animated film. Bellwether has escaped jail.
The villainous sheep has taken superstar Gazelle hostage. The ride has you follow Judy and Nick as they follow the trail through Zootopia.
Does Zootopia: Hot Pursuit impress? Let’s take a look!
OK, it’s a pretty run-of-the-mill trackless dark ride. It, however, doesn’t do much new and relies heavily on screen projections. Those hoping for more audio animatronics may be disappointed until the conclusion of the chase.
Zootopia: Hot Pursuit ends with an awesome-looking Gazelle animatronic. The hip-shaking creature will no doubt cause a lot of furries to make a pilgrimage to Shanghai Disney.
So, when will this ride be headed to Disneyland or Walt Disney World? We don’t know.
I would offer some suggestions if it does come State-side, though. Fewer projection screens, please! I get that it’s more budget-friendly than animatronics, but it’s also less immersive.
The trackless vehicles also lack a thrill aspect unless they do something similar to what we see in Tower of Terror or Rise of the Resistance. I wouldn’t keep going back to watching a bunch of screens.
Since the video is truncated, there may be some elements that were cut out that could satiate thrill-seekers like myself. However, I’m pretty sure you’ll go from scene to scene without much more action than the vehicle spinning around a couple of times.
Zootopia: Hot Pursuit will open on December 20th! Let us know what your opinions are below.
