Marvel’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps” is very close to matching DC’s “Superman” opening weekend.
The “Fantastic Four” came in with $118 million domestically, and added another $100 million overseas for a three-day total of $218 million.
“Superman” launched slightly higher in the United States, earning $122 million, and another $98 million in foreign markets, for a combined $220 million.
The two films launched with a difference of only $2 million or so. Of course, “Fantastic Four: First Steps” doesn’t have an official opening total yet. It may fluctuate up or down a bit.
What was the budget for these two films?
“Superman” is at about $500 million worldwide after three weekends in theaters. The film cost $225 million to make, and the marketing estimates are about $125 million, not considering the cut for theaters and other expenses. If the numbers are accurate, it is likely the film has broken even at this point.
“Fantastic Four: First Steps” had an estimated budget of $200 million, with no reports on marketing expenses. It will need to make at least $400 – $500 million to break even. Which looks possible if it continues to stay in step with “Superman”.
How do the reviews compare?
Rotten Tomatoes has “Superman” at an 83% critical score and a 92% audience score based on over 25,000 verified reviews.

“Fantastic Four: First Steps” is currently at an 87% critical score and a 93% audience score with over 10,000 verified reviews. Of course this film has one weekend out, while “Superman” has three weekends of reviews.

Both films have an “A-” CinemaScore.
Again, it seems very close.
We won’t know how they do compared to each other for a while. However, comic fans and superhero fans are likely seeing both films, which means the box office totals could end up very similar.
It was an odd decision to release a Marvel and DC film so close together, given the rumors of “superhero” fatigue and inevitable competition, but it seems to be working out for them both.
Movie theaters are the real winners after “Jurassic World Rebirth” and these two superhero films. July is looking pretty good for them.
