Out of the cast of characters from the original Star Wars trilogy, very few reappeared in the prequel trilogy years later due to it taking place decades earlier. The one hint that we got from the days of the Republic and the Jedi order was Obi-Wan Kenobi (played by Sir Alec Guinness), who served as a sort of Merlin the Wizard type of character to the young heroes. His early teachings to Luke started his path to becoming a Jedi, eventually defeating the empire and saving the galaxy.
Years later Ewan McGregor would play a much younger version of him in the prequels. First as a padawan to Qui-Gon Jinn and later becoming Anakin Skywalker’s master. His performance as the gentleman warrior was seen as a highlight of the series, which lead to many fans hoping he would return following Disney’a acquisition of Lucasfilm.
McGregor did eventually return in the Disney+ original series Obi-Wan Kenobi, set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Despite the hype from fans the show ended up disappointing many with its odd choices in direction and blatant retcons that went against the films. While the final episode did tease a continuation the mixed reception caused doubts for the show’s future.
Now two years after its premier Ewan McGregor recently told Variety that he hopes to play the iconic Jedi once more. He said:
“I really do hope we get a chance to do another one. Between where we ended off in the series and when Alec Guinness comes on screen with Luke Skywalker, I think there’s another few stories to tell in there.“
McGregor did state before that he had thought of some ideas on where to take the show. While it was established that Darth Maul was still alive during this time, leading to him potentially being a possible threat at some point, there currently seems to be little chance of a continuation, especially after the report that Lucasfilm will be slowing down their output of television shows.
Only time will tell if we will get to see more stories following the exiled Jedi. That is if he is the main character this time and it ins’t a bait and switch like before.
What do you think? Should McGregor get another shot at Obi-Wan? Or should he remain in exile? Let is know your thoughts.
