The Star Wars brand is currently undergoing some major shifts. Following the recent cancellation of The Acolyte, any and all projects currently in development seem to be up in the air. The Mandalorian & Grogu film is set to be their big return to theatrical films after a nearly seven-year hiatus in 2026. But other projects, such as the Rey film, aka New Jedi Order, and Rogue Squadron, seem to be in limbo and potentially cancelled.
In addition to the films, it was reported that Lucasfilm would be reducing the number of live-action shows made for Disney+. While Lucasfilm mainly produces Star Wars shows, their one unrelated series, Willow, did so poorly that it was removed from the platform.
However, despite these setbacks, one voice that doesn’t seem to go away is actor Ewan McGregor. The Scottish-born actor frequently discusses how he wants to continue his Obi-Wan Kenobi series. After playing the Jedi master in the prequel trilogy from 1999 to 2005, the actor wanted to return to the role and explore the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series ran from May 27th – June 22nd of 2022, with a total of six episodes. While initially welcomed by fans when the actual series aired, many were let down, much like the similar Book of Boba Fett. The show was believed to follow Obi-Wan, as he looks after a young Luke on Tattooine. However, it turned out to be a rescue mission for a young Princess Leia with lots of screen time dedicated to other characters over Kenobi himself. The series was even guilty of breaking continuity with the films.
Despite this, McGregor has been trying to get a second season greenlit, even though the original was meant to be a one-and-done mini-series.
While appearing at this year’s L.A. Comic Con and doing a panel, he supposedly hinted that there were talks about doing some follow-up and that ideas are being tossed around. He stated:
“Obviously, between the end of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and when Alec Guinness is Obi-Wan Kenobi, there’s got to be another few stories in there.“
He even commented on him possibly doing something as the character set during the Clone Wars era.
“There’s a couple of things. I’d quite like to wear that armor. I was speaking to someone earlier from the Clone Wars. I think that’s something I would enjoy.“
He also stated that he wouldn’t care if they had to de-age him with CGI to make him younger:
“I don’t care, I’ll do it. And that way, Hayden and I can really get back together again.“
While McGregor does seem passionate about playing the character again (much like Ryan Reynolds wanted to get a proper version of Deadpool on the big screen following the disaster that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine), if he perseveres, he may eventually get his wish. The only issue is that if it is anything like the six episodes we got from the first season of the show, it may be best left behind.
What do you think? Should McGregor get another shot at Obi-Wan Kenobi following the underwhelming mini-series? Or should the character remain in exile until his appearance in A New Hope? Let us know your thoughts.
