Editors Cut Major Screentime for This ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Actor

Guardians of the Galaxy was loaded with Easter eggs and cameos that spanned decades of Marvel Comics lore. However, some characters got lost in the mix when their roles were much more significant.

One such case is that of Michael Rosenbaum, who played Martinex, one of the earliest Guardians members in the comics. But why was his spot in the trilogy cut back?

Rosenbaum, best known for his role as a young Lex Luthor in Smallville, says that the editors cut out his larger role in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. This isn’t uncommon, however.

The editing teams sometimes need to remove entire characters, reducing them to background decor rather than active members of the plot to tighten up a movie or improve the flow of scenes.

Thanks to Comicbook.com and The Hollywood Reporter, we have Rosenbaum’s first-hand account of what could have been in the previous two Guardians films. Would Martinex have been more like his comic book counterpart if his parts were left in?

Speaking at Nashville ComiCon, the actor said his role was to be “a lot bigger” and :

“You were supposed to see … it was written in the script to see Martinex’s powers, which were really cool. But they had so much to talk about in the script that they ended up cutting it out at the end. And there was some other stuff.“

Rosenbaum isn’t holding a bag of sour grapes, though. He’s glad for the time he got to spend with the team:

“For me, it’s like, I’m working with my friends, I get paid, I’m in a big Marvel movie, life could suck worse, you know what I mean? I’m very grateful.“

James Gunn has shown that he can make an ensemble cast work, but Guardians of the Galaxy was already pretty stuffed when Martinex first appeared in Volume 2. Not even Sylvester Stallone’s Starhawk escaped the cameo treatment. What hope did Rosenbaum have?

It could be argued that the Pluvian should have been a core Guardians member from the start of the team’s introduction in the MCU. Then again, was he as marketable as Groot, Rocket, or Drax?
