“Tron: Ares” releases this week, and early critical reviews are mixed. Currently, the film is rotten on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 55% but only 62 reviews have been posted.
The score could go up or down as more reviews are released.

Throughout the day, the score has continued to drop. Earlier it was in the 60s, and now it’s in the mid-50s.
Here are some of the current reviews,
(These are a mix of fresh and rotten reviews.)
-“The plot is not the thing but neither is the spectacle.” – Kevin Meher “The Times”
-“This movie begs to be seen in a theater because of the visuals, score, and sound design, but suffers from a mediocre plot and basic characters.” – Tessa Smith “The Direct”
-“Tron: Ares has high-quality visual effects but low-quality dialogue in a Terminator franchise ripoff story. The cast members are caught in the middle. Jeff Bridges shows up for five minutes in a sci-fi robe and acts like The Dude from The Big Lebowski.” – Carla Hay “Culture Mix”
-“Ares is chock full of jaw-dropping visuals and amazing effects that, for me anyway, made the lack of plot a non-issue.” – Aaron Pruner “CNET”
-“TRON: Ares is all recycled storytelling and tropes, with nothing worthy of the spectacle the film aims for or Trent Reznor gracing the soundtrack”- Robert Kojder “Flickering Myth”
-“At its best, the kinetic third Tron film could pass for a visual album. There is a premise, but only in the same sense that a fashion collection has a story.” – Tara Brady “Irish Times
-“It’s a film whose only goal is to make “Tron” into a renewable resource in its own right… If nothing else, “Ares” might just be relevant, palatable, and undemanding enough to pull that off.” – David Ehrlich “IndieWire”
-“The fact that most of the movie takes place in the real world as opposed to the neon-lit Grid is what differentiates Ares from what came before, but it also hugely narrows the scope of how visually interesting it can be compared to its predecessors.” – Emily Garbutt “GamesRadar+”
-“Tron: Ares is certainly cool, but in no way edgy. It’s familiar, safe, and formulaic in very Disney ways that make it work overall, but that also means it never wows or surprises you too significantly.” – Germain Lussier “io9”
-“Whereas the original 1982 Disney film on which it was based felt ahead of its time, Sean Bailey’s latest attempt to franchise-ify the “Tron” brand reads mostly as an exercise in nostalgia.” – Peter Debruge “Variety”
-“A beautifully designed, if slightly hollow, blockbuster.” – James Mottram “Radio Times”
-“Mostly, when you watch Tron: Ares, you become aware of the degree to which this franchise has exhausted its own metaphor.” – Alison Willmore “New York Magazine” / “Vulture”
It is worth noting that critics have hated films that audiences loved, and audience attendance is what matters.
The box office expectations have been set between $35 million – $55 million for the domestic opening of this film. That is a wide range, but not a great amount overall.
I will be going to see this to do a review so stay tuned for that.
