Recently, on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) revealed that his next movie role would be the live-action version of Moana because that’s exactly what Disney needs right now: more live-action remakes.
He also stated that Lin-Manuel Miranda will once again be helping to compose music for the film. Given that every movie Disney has done lately either is done by Miranda or sounds like Miranda did it, it’s to be expected.
Of course, Johnson had to break out into a live version of “Your Welcome” from the film.
When Disney announced the live-action version of Moana, many fans questioned the decision, given that the film was only released in 2016. Since that announcement, Disney has also revealed that they are working on a live-action Frozen, which is only ten years old.
Given the diminishing returns these films have seen, plus the backlash around Snow White, one would think Disney would stop making these films for a while—especially live-action versions of films that were only released seven years ago.
What’s next? A live-action Enanto? Why not just release the animated film and the live-action version at the same time? Or better yet, skip the animated version and just make everything live-action to cut out the middleman?
Even with Disney CEO Bob Iger indicating that the company would put out fewer films and use lower budgets, they will not stop with the live-action remakes. It seems we will see fewer films, but they will include the ones that are failing with audiences.
