DreamWorks’ latest animated feature, The Wild Robot, has been received extremely well by both critics and audiences. As of the writing of this article, the movie scores a 98% on both critical and audience scores.
Unfortunately, the praise doesn’t translate to box office success. In its nearly four weeks in theaters, the film has earned just over $152 million against a $78 million budget. The movie has nearly crossed the break-even point, however, it wasn’t very well advertised, meaning that Universal probably didn’t see it as a priority compared to established IPs such as Kung Fu Panda 4 from earlier this year.
While the movie isn’t a huge moneymaker like some other DreamWorks films, it has since gained a cult following, with multiple pieces of fan art from talented creators being made.

But despite not making Shrek levels of money, it appears that this will not be the last time that we see Roz and the animals of the forest. According to Deadline, the films director Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How To Train Your Dragon and The Croods) a sequel is 100% being planned.
While the film is based on the 2016 book of the same name by author Peter Brown, a sequel, The Wild Robot Escapes, was published one year later. That story follows Roz as she befriends a family who owns the farms that she has been tasked to work at after returning to civilization. However, she plans to keep her promise to Brightbill and return to the island by escaping her human owners.
Depending on how things play out, hopefully, we will get to return to this world of technology and nature living together in harmony. Let’s hope that home video sales and streaming numbers will aid in Universal’s decision to officially green-light it.
What do you think? Would you like to see The Wild Robot get a sequel? Let us know your thoughts.
