Have you ever seen the infamous 1978 “Star Wars Holiday Special?” Did you ever wonder how it even got made. Well wonder no longer because a documentary about the special that basically disappeared is coming on December 5 (Star Wars Life Day.)
“A Disturbance in the Force,” is the title for the documentary createdby September Club and distributed by Giant Pictures. The film debuted the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year and those wanting to check it out can do so on Blu-Ray and digital. The documentary is also set to play in select theaters in the United States, United Kingdom and Austrailia.
Here is the trailer:
According to Variety:
“A Disturbance in the Force” chronicles the making of the bizarre “Star Wars Holiday Special” that aired 45 years ago and never surfaced again. For some context: “Star Wars” was released in theaters in 1977 and became a cultural phenomenon. A year later, filmmaker George Lucas was talked into cashing in on the craze by producing a holiday-themed variety special. Plenty of people (approximately 13 million) tuned in when CBS aired “Star Wars Holiday Special” during the week of Thanksgiving. The only problem? It became a famously terrible two hours of television, never to be shown again.”
It’s definitely an interesting documentary that many “Star Wars” fans, myself included, will probably want to check out. The “Holiday Special” is something that has been long discussed but rarely disected and after 45 years it will be interesting to see how the train wreck came to be.
