Disney’s Wish Domestic Box Office Tracking Isn’t Great

Disney’s latest animated feature, “Wish” is releasing in theaters on November 22, 2024, and the estimates aren’t that great for a film with a reported $200 million budget.

According to Box Office Pro, the latest animated film from “Disney” is projected to come in at about $45-$65M for the opening weekend, and long-range estimates put it at $185M-$289M.

When the film is estimated to cost $200 million, it needs to hit around $400 – $500 million to break even. Now, globally, it is possible for the film to at least break even and maybe make some money. The estimates are only for the domestic box office.

Presales are shown to be better than “Encanto” and “Strange World.” However, it wouldn’t take much to beat “Strange World” as it only did $11.9M for its opening weekend with a five-day total of only $18.6M. It only came in at about $38M for its total domestic box office take. “Encanto” made $40.6M for its first five days, but it was released on Disney+ at the same time it was released theatrically. It made about $96.1M domestically, but it was also available on Disney’s streaming service.

Saying “Wish” is going to beat “Encanto” and “Strange World” isn’t the “win” Disney wants it to sound like.

Plus, a new Trolls film is coming out on November 17! “Trolls Band Together” has been released in some international markets, but it will be released domestically just days before “Wish.”

Disney must know the estimates for opening weekend were low because they started offering early access on November 18 at select theaters. This gives them a four-day “jump” on the box office. Plus it moves them up to compete against “Trolls Band Together” the day after the new Universal film releases.

We don’t yet know how this will pan out. Estimates are, estimates; we won’t know how Wish will actually do until after it’s been released. It could go up or down from the numbers provided so far.

I don’t think it’s going to be a blockbuster.
