Disney’s Wish Disappoints At Weak Box Office Coming in Third Place. The Marvels Fall To Sixth Place.

Disney’s “Wish” came in third place at the box office during its first week. That is with it getting an early release on November 18 ahead of the five-day weekend. If that weren’t bad enough, “The Marvels” is in sixth place for the weekend, bested by releases from last week.

Disney now has two box office disappointments to add to their collection. Marvel, with the exception of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” has seen steep declines and is not even coming close to the billion-dollar theatrical runs they used to see. Walt Disney Animation and Pixar are seeing the same trends, with their last three animated films not doing that well.

“Wish” only brought in $49 million globally. It was estimated to bring $50-$55 million domestically but ended up with less than that globally. The film cost $200 million to produce, not accounting for the marketing, which is likely high.

“The Marvels” is in the same boat. That film cost almost $273 million, but with reimbursements from the U.K. government, it came down to about $220 million, not counting the huge marketing push. That film sits at about $188.9 million globally.

Disney has a problem. Normally, Marvel and Walt Disney Animation would have easily beat the competition. It’s looking like Disney is seeing a new normal. Part of it is people finding it easier to wait for these films to release on Disney+. “When will Wish be on Disney+” has been trending for days. The current answer is that we don’t know yet, but it’s likely early 2024.

Walt Disney Co. stock is currently staying up, in the $95 range. Hopefully, these failures don’t impact the value because that would be another hit to the company.

Disney’s next best chance at a big box office is likely “Deadpool 3” in summer 2024. Hopefully, they can pull this all back out and at least hit profitability with a theatrical release.
