Disney’s Primos Is Not Dead After All? Set To Premier In July.

After much speculation, the Disney animated series Primos has resurfaced with a brand-new premiere date. Originally meant to premiere earlier this month, the controversial series will now premiere on Thursday, July 25th, at 8:00 pm EST on The Disney Channel and will release on Disney+ the next day.

The series was originally announced in June 2023 as a show focusing on a young girl named Tater Ramirez Humphrey. She is forced to live with her extended family, mostly cousins, hence the show’s title, “Primos.”

However, the show immediately drew backlash over its portrayals of certain characters as Mexican/Latin American stereotypes. Even the show’s title, “Primos,” is technically incorrect as “Primo” refers to male in Spanish while “Prima” refers to female, and she has both male and female cousins. Not to mention the comparisons to Nickelodeon’s The Loud House.

The backlash escalated when the show’s lead voice actress, Myrna Velasco, responded to the backlash, saying that the Spanish language was a form of colonialism and was forced on Central and South America. This hot take was not received very well either.

When the series was set to premiere earlier this month on June 6th, it mysteriously disappeared without a trace. The show was even scrubbed from the Disney+ P.R. page, leading to many assuming that it had been scrapped and written off.

But now, out of nowhere, the show is back with its new premier date in July. It isn’t currently known why the delay was made.

While some in the animation community always welcome giving new shows a chance, the backlash from the announcement a year earlier may have soured those feelings for some. Hopefully, the initial backlash for the show was taken into consideration to improve the show after having a whole year since the announcement to develop it.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to Primos? Do you think they took the initial response into consideration? Let us know your thoughts.
