This morning Disney’s Hollywood Studios had to call in a Hazmat team for a sodium hypochlorite spill backstage.
According to the Orlando Sentinel:
“About 255 gallons of sodium hypochlorite spilled from a storage tank on the ground because of an equipment failure, according to a notice from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.”
The spill happened at the Reedy Creek Energy Services Chiller Plant that’s located behind Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage and near the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.
For those that are wondering, Sodium Hypochlorite is used as a cleaning agent mainly used as a bleaching agent. It would make sense that it would be on property.
The Orlando Sentinel indicated that no waterways were affected and the spill was contained and was being cleaned up. It was an area where guests wouldn’t be, so it didn’t affect them.
Of course the Reedy Creek Improvement District reported the spill to the state.
