Disney Worries About Theme Park Attractions Being “Offensive” But Has Deadpool and Wolverine To Disneyland

Disney has been making many changes to attractions over the past few years, claiming that they are “insensitive” or “offensive” to guests. However, some could argue they have a double standard as they allow “R-rated” characters like Deadpool and Wolverine into their Disney California Adventure theme park.

I am going to start by making it clear that I am not offended by the duo’s appearance in Disneyland performing their “story time” comedy. But it is interesting to me that the Walt Disney Company is allowing this while worrying that Dr. Facilier and Voodoo may be “offensive” to guests, so they didn’t use him in Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

Recently, Deadpool made a joke about reading Disney+’s terms of service, which was clearly a dig at their latest legal fiasco: They tried to use those same TOS to force a wrongful death suit to arbitration.

The Jungle Cruise was so “offensive” that they needed to replace the natives with chimpanzees but Deadpool and Wolverine telling stories to kids is just fine?

Deadpool’s persona would immediately raise red flags for a theme park with kids. I personally love Deadpool, and the joke made at the park was definitely in character for the Marvel icon, but Deadpool may be too much for a theme park, especially a Disney theme park, given how the company is so concerned with offending people.

They changed the entire wench auction scene in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction to not “offend.” The Jungle Cruise was reimagined to take out the natives and Trader Sam, except for the implication that he is stealing and selling lost and found items.

Recently the Neverland Indians were redone to be less stereotyped, which meant they were not the characters from the film.

Splash Mountain was completely rethemed to remove “offensive” characters from the park.

Yet Deadpool, who’s known for offending everyone, including Disney, is given an entire show at the park.

It’s just an odd choice given Disney’s efforts to not offend people.

Again, I personally like that Deadpool is in the parks. I’m just pointing out some could think that Disney has a double standard. If not being insensitive is important, adding that character is opening them up to potential complaints.

The joke about Disney+ terms of service was likely offensive to many people. More so than the red-head in Pirates of the Caribbean.

Just an observation.
