Disney World’s Cake Bake Shop Location Faces Multiple Law Suits for Not Paying Minimum Wage and Charging Employees

The Cake Bake Shop is widely known at Walt Disney World for its ridiculous pricing for cake, but now they are known for facing lawsuits from 11 workers over pay, job duties, and charges for footwear and uniform cleaning.  It is important to note that the Cake Bake Shop is a third-party restaurant and is not owned and operated by the Walt Disney Company. The location is operated by owner Gwendolyn Rogers.

This location can be found on the Boardwalk behind EPCOT.

According to WDWNT, the cake shop is facing multiple lawsuits from employees, including a new lawsuit from former employee Alexandria Pope.

Ms. Pope is suing for almost $5k plus interest and attorney fees (1/2 in unpaid wages and the other 1/2 in damages) from her six months of work from summer 2024 until winter 2025.

Pope claims that Rogers violated Florida’s minimum wage act by asking Pope to do extra work that kept her away from her main job, which paid her tips.  If waiting on guests gave her most of her pay, she was instead told to do work that non-tip-based workers would do while being paid as a tip-based worker.

“Rather than being ‘occasional,’ the side work that Plaintiff was required to undertake occupied substantial discrete and insular periods of the Plaintiff’s workday. Plaintiff was required to work for substantial periods of time before Plaintiff’s tip-producing shift began. Plaintiff was additionally required to work for substantial periods of time after Plaintiff’s shift concluded. Plaintiff had sustained periods of time during shifts where only side work tasks were being performed.”

Translation- Pope was paid a low wage plus tips to be waitstaff, but the Cake Bake Shop made her do work outside the tip-based job, and still only paid her the extra low wage per hour instead of minimum wage.

Pope is also accusing the company of taking part in her extra low pay for uniform cleaning and required footwear.

If true, this is total BS.

She is not alone.

WDWNT is reporting 11 lawsuits against Rogers and her company, many of which have been closed. Some of the amounts go up to $30k plus attorney fees.

I already wouldn’t eat there because of the ridiculous price, but this reinforces my decision not to support the company.
