Disney just announced that they would bulldoze Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island to add more IP at the Magic Kingdom. Frontierland will no longer be Frontierland; it will be Western IP land. Of course, the Disney suits waited until after D23 to confirm this when they could hide from parks fans.
Parks fans are already upset that Disney will keep calling the area Frontierland when it’s modern-day “Cars.” It defeats the purpose, like Autotopia in Tomorrowland.
Couldn’t they have just made that Cars-themed? But I digress.
The new concept art shows the changes, and the Disney Parks Blog says the area will be removed.

“It’s time to leave Radiator Springs and head west into exciting new locations. To make way for this completely new frontier, the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will be transformed into vast and rugged terrains for a rally race with some of the world’s most iconic racers.”
While I know Tom Sawyer Island is not popular and I can understand them wanting to use that for something else, taking out the Rivers of America makes no sense. It’s the only water way in the parks. The other parks all have main water features.
While it is “western-themed” it is not Frontier, but WDI’s Walt Disney World Portfolio Executive Producer, Michael Hundgen is trying to say that it is a “new frontier.” Sure.
“We are thrilled to create this original Cars adventure and put our guests in the driver’s seat as we—quite literally—explore a new frontier in Frontierland. Part of pioneering this new story includes tapping into the themes of exploration and adventure that inspire so many of us to keep propelling forward. Anytime we touch Magic Kingdom, we recognize the massive responsibility that exists to get it right and tell stories that connect with our guests.”
The only new frontier about this is the wild world of money they think they will make by adding Cars. Calling this a “frontier” is a huge stretch, and park fans are calling them out.
This is a terrible decision. The placement is not it.

They just killed the vibe of Magic Kingdom

I am worried about my beloved Haunted Mansion as well.
Wow. This is quite drastic. Wondering what the disappearance of the Rivers of America will mean for the sightlines of Haunted Mansion, which was clearly designed as a house on a hill overlooking the river. It looks like it will be tucked away in a corner behind some trees now. https://t.co/ijUv1YvXIU pic.twitter.com/FoVKL4j3qK

I agree with this. I think the water is needed and there should be more.
I’m very excited about some of the announcements from this weekend. I love the Cars movies. This, however, is too far.
Magic Kingdom and the other WDW parks need MORE water and kinetic energy, not less. The Rivers of America is a quintessential, historic part of Magic Kingdom https://t.co/sDoED5eNEN

But don’t worry; Disney says you have until next year to take in Frontierland before they mess it all up.
“Ahead of work revving into high gear next year, guests will have plenty of time to experience the charm and nostalgia of Frontierland as it is today.”
