Disney Vacation Club rule change ends reservation walking. Here’s what it means for members.

A one-sentence rule change means members can no longer modify travel dates until the original check-out date is inside 11 months. The loophole it closes had been in use for years.

Disney Vacation Club changed one sentence in its reservation rules on Sept. 3, and a practice members have argued about for years is effectively finished.

Modifications to travel dates and room types on a confirmed reservation can now only be made when the original check-out date falls within 11 months of the modification request.

What reservation walking was

The strategy exploited a gap between two dates.

At the 11-month home resort booking window, a member can reserve up to seven consecutive nights. The check-in date sits inside the window. The check-out date, several days later, does not.

Under the old rules, a member could book those seven nights early, then modify the reservation daily, dropping the first night and adding one at the end.

Repeat that enough times, and the reservation walks forward until it lands on the dates you actually wanted, all while holding a room nobody else could book.

How the new rule stops it

Inside the Magic worked through an example. A member targeting a standard studio at Disney’s BoardWalk Villas during the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts, wanting Jan. 19-22, 2028, would previously book Jan. 1-7, 2028 on Feb. 1, 2027, then shift it forward a day at a time.

Under the new rule, that reservation cannot be modified until the original check-out date of Jan. 7, 2028 is itself within 11 months.

By the time the member could start walking, every other member with home resort priority could book the same dates directly.

The head start disappears. The early booking becomes a liability rather than an advantage.

What DVC members can still do

Two things are unaffected.

Members can still cancel a reservation entirely, and can still update guest information on a confirmed booking.

Only travel dates and room types are locked.

What Disney actually said

The change appeared as a News & Alerts entry on DVCMember.com titled “Upcoming Updates to Reservation Modifications,” linking to a page of modification and cancellation guidelines.

Disney’s stated reason is consistency with Home Resort Rules and Regulations, noting that booking system updates are coming.

Nothing in that language mentions walking. DVC Fan noted that Disney has not publicly said stopping the practice is the reason, though the practical effect is difficult to miss.

Why members were arguing about this

Some members viewed walking as gaming the system, letting a small number of owners jump ahead of everyone who waited until their actual dates opened.

Others argued that DVC’s own booking system permitted the modifications, and that members were using tools the company provided.

Disney Tourist Blog reported that frustration had been raised at the Annual Condo Association Meeting and across member forums, driven partly by a surge in owners who hold memberships as a business rather than for family use.

This follows a longer crackdown

The rule change is the newest step in a sequence.

In 2025, DVC updated its rules to emphasize that reservations are intended for personal use.

In March 2026, Disney formally published a Commercial Use Policy that expanded the definition of commercial activity and established additional enforcement penalties.

That was followed by new eligibility restrictions on a popular annual passholder type for DVC members.

Who this affects most

Walking required time, attention and a willingness to modify a reservation daily for weeks. It was most useful for the hardest rooms at the most competitive resorts during peak periods.

Commercial renters with large point balances had the most capacity to run it at scale.

Casual members booking a standard week at their home resort will likely notice nothing.

What else is happening with DVC

Several dates are worth knowing.

Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge opens July 1, 2027 on Bay Lake. DVC members can book cash reservations starting Oct. 6, with passholders following Oct. 7 and general booking Oct. 8. A points booking date has not been announced.

The Disney Believe gets a livestream reveal on Oct. 7.

Disney has not said when the booking system updates referenced in its notice will finish rolling out.
