Disney to Spend $22.4 Million Transforming Muppets Into Monsters Inc.

Work has been underway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios to transform the former MuppetVision 3D theater and Muppet Courtyard into a new Monsters Inc. area, and newly released records suggest the project could cost Disney over $22 million.

The $22.4 million expenditure amount comes from an estimate provided by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. The Orlando Business Journal requested the records, and CFTOD  responded to a public records request on January 9.

Where is the money going?

The records reveal the investment amount includes the work for the transformation of the Muppet Theater into a new Monsters Inc. theater-style show including “interior demolition and installation of structural and architectural elements.”

A new roller coaster based on the moving door conveyor belt from the film is also set to be built in the area, featuring Walt Disney World’s first suspended coaster. Rumors also indicates the attraction will feature a vertical take-off.

The larger land will include new dining and shopping locations, along with the re-themed theater and new coaster.

Why are Humans in Monstropolis?

According to the Orlando Business Journal,

This new land will pick up after the events of the “Monster Inc.” film, with humans now invited to visit the world of Monstropolis.”

That explains it fairly well. If humans are there and they can laugh, it should power the city well.
