After online backlash, Disney has removed a controversial portrait from the Haunted Mansion gift shop at Walt Disney World. Here’s what happened and why the artwork sparked so much discussion.
A portrait of a bride assumed to be Constance Hatchaway, the infamous “Bride” from the Haunted Mansion attraction, recently debuted at the newly opened Haunted Mansion gift shop, Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond in Disneyland. However, the artwork was removed after it was revealed to have likely been a print from Redbubble, allegedly using artificial intelligence (AI), a decision that drew significant backlash from fans and artists alike.

The Portrait’s Backstory
The artwork in question depicted a ghostly bride. According to reports, the image was not hand-drawn by a Disney artist but instead purchased from the account yourfavdraw on Redbubble. The image is called “The Ghostly Bride.”
The decision to use a purchased piece of art has become a focal point of criticism, with many fans arguing that Disney, known for its rich tradition of hand-crafted artistry, should not rely on other people’s works or AI for its merchandise.
The piece debuted in December 2024, when the new Haunted Mansion gift shop was opened.
Another piece was also questioned for being purchased. The veiled bust.

Removal Following Backlash
In January 2025, Disney responded to the criticism by removing the artwork from the shop.
Of course, Disney has not issued an official statement on the matter. Still, many believe the decision was made following growing concerns from fans about using AI art and using art from others in Disney Parks.
Fan Reactions
The Haunted Mansion community, known for its passionate fanbase, expressed strong opinions on the matter. Many fans shared their disappointment online, calling for Disney to prioritize traditional artistry and uphold the company’s legacy of creating unique, hand-crafted experiences.
I think it’s okay to use outside props and art in conjunction with in-house work, as long as they have permission to do so. A lot of props in attractions are bought elsewhere and tied into the design. The reason this might be a big deal is because it’s a bride and meant to represent a popular character in the attraction that is said to be getting and update.
What’s Next?
As Disney continues to expand its merchandise offerings in gift shops like Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond, the removal of this portrait serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring the craftsmanship that defines the Disney Parks experience. Fans will be watching closely to see how Disney responds to similar situations in the future.
