There’s no escaping it. The holiday season has officially started. Even before Halloween was over at Walt Disney World, construction began on the grand gingerbread house. So, we may as well embrace it, even if you’re at home browsing Disney Plus.
Disney’s streaming service has opened up a Happy Holidays section. It’s full of Christmas classics and more than a few duds. For every long-standing staple of the season like The Nightmare Before Christmas or The Muppet Christmas Carol, Disney Plus has added something terrible like Home Alone 4 or Home Sweet Home Alone.
At least the list starts off strong with The Santa Clauses series and the surprisingly fun Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. I’ll even give some leeway to Jingle All The Way because it does have a lot of amusing quotable lines.
I’m not sure why Hawkeye is here. Is it because the one and only season took place during the Winter time? In an effort to make the list as huge as possible, Disney Plus threw everything in, no matter how tenuous its connection to Christmas or any other Winter holiday was.
Oh, don’t forget Snow Buddies! You know, the 2008 direct-to-video epic… Or how about the three-hour-long Arendelle Castle Yule Log show? Honestly, three hours of a low-effort CGI fire is more fun than the two Frozen films.
On the bright side, this collection also includes several Simpsons Christmas episodes. Of course, there’s the outstanding Mickey’s Christmas Carol.
The real stars of the holiday, however, are things like The Small One, directed by animation legend Don Bluth. Not only does it directly connect to the origins of Christmas, but it may be one of the most emotional cartoons you can watch during this time of the year.
