Disney Parks Generate $67 Billion For the US Economy, Mostly in Florida and California

A study by Tourism Economics indicates that Disney reportedly generates $67 billion for the US economy with their theme park business. However, most of it is in California and Florida.

The study was also requested and paid for by Disney, so take that into consideration.

“For the last 20 years, Disney has conducted studies on how it impacts local economies where it does business, and a new report prepared by economists from Tourism Economics, a division of Oxford Economics, sheds light on the profound economic impact of the theme park that started it all.”

According to the study, about $16.1 billion is generated in Southern California. $40.3 billion is generated in Florida, which includes Disney Signature Experiences with the Disney Vacation Club and Disney Cruise Lines.

The remaining $10.6 billion is generated by other areas in the United States. So, likely places like Aulani, Adventures by Disney, non-theme park resorts, and anything else they buy from companies located in the United States.

This has led the Chairman of Disney Parks and Experiences, Josh D’Amaro, to claim that Disney “defines” themed entertainment in America, but I would argue that they do, but so do others like Universal. Epic Universe just out Disneyed Disney.

“Disney defines the themed entertainment business in America, and our presence is felt across the country. Our destinations create economies far beyond the gates of our parks, and when we invest in the groundbreaking experiences that only Disney can deliver, growth follows.”

I am certain Disney drives billions of dollars into the American economy annually, but I also find posting the study to be a bit self-serving. They are trying to boost attendance against competitors and economic headwinds, which leave American families with far less “extra” money for Disney theme parks.
