Disney+ Misses Expected Subscriber Goals by Millions, Disney Parks Down 44%

Disney missed its projected subscriber goals for Disney+ by millions, according to the DIS Q2 2021 Earnings report.

Disney missed the mark by almost 6 million subscribers, and one has to wonder if the campaign to #CancelDisneyPlus after the firing of Gina Carano played into it at all.

From CNBC

The company missed on subscriber estimates for Disney+, coming in at 103.6 million paid subscribers. It was expected to post 109 million. Average monthly revenue per user also dipped 29% year over year to $3.99, which the company attributed to the launch of Disney+ Hotstar.

The streaming service had been bolstering the company’s success as it was losing out on business from Covid restrictions.

Revenue at Disney’s parks, experiences and products segment fell 44% to $3.2 billion, as many of its theme parks were either closed or operating at reduced capacity and its cruise ships and guided tours were suspended.

While Covid is certainly to blame for the decline in Parks revenue, the miss on Disney+ is perplexing. Perhaps there’s just too much competition, or Disney just isn’t producing enough quality content to draw people to the platform after The Mandalorian and Marvel series are over.
