Disney / Marvel Get Rights Back to ‘The Punisher’ and ‘Jessica Jones’ from Netflix

The live-action rights to both The Punisher and Jessica Jones have now reverted from Netflix to Disney-owned Marvel Studios. That would mean that Disney currently has the live-action rights to Daredevil and all of its spinoffs which include Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders in addition to Jessica Jones and The Punisher.

Does this mean that we could eventually see a continuation or revival of these popular Marvel Netflix series on Disney+?

It’s possible, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. At this point, Disney can do anything they want with those characters, including starting over from scratch with a reboot.

And even though Punisher actor John Bernthal is down with reprising his role, The Punisher has become “problematic” as of late due to some of the Capitol rioters wearing the insignia.

However, the word on the street is that Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Matt Murdock / Daredevil in the next Spider-Man movie. Since the next Spider-Man movie is reportedly dealing with the multiverse, it doesn’t mean that this Daredevil exists in the MCU, however, and might just be a multiverse nod to the fan favorite character.

When Disney had revealed plans to launch their own streaming service which would rival Netflix, Netflix canceled all of their Marvel titles in a move which shocked fans of the successful properties. The rights to the characters remained with Netflix for two years after they were cancelled and that window has now officially closed, meaning Jessica Jones and Punisher are now eligible to used by Marvel Studios.
