Disney has reportedly decided to go back to live-action remakes after “Lilo & Stitch” did over $1 billion at the global box office.
The live-action remake was paused last April after “Snow White” failed at the box office. Disney is now doubling down on the live-action films after one of them did well. Now Scarlett Johansson wants to be in it?
Why is Disney changing their mind?
Reports indicate that Disney feels “Snow White” didn’t do well because the film was older and lacked audience appeal. While “Snow White” is definitely an old Disney film, the “modern audiences” take, creepy CGI dwarfs, and Rachel Zegler alienating a large part of the audience didn’t help.
Disney seems to think that if they do remakes of modern films, they will perform better as other live-action films like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” and “The Little Mermaid” did.
It is important to note that these films, even the ones based on recent animated films, have been losing steam with audiences over the years. But Disney seems to believe that if they are more modern stories, the audience will appear.
They probably aren’t wrong. I think the live-action “Moana” will do really well. If Disney can keep costs down, the live-action films could be profitable, but they are tiresome.
Which character is Scarlett Johansson playing?
Scarlett Johansson is reportedly interested in playing Mother Gothel in a live-action remake.
Currently, no casting announcements have officially been made. We only know that Michael Gracey (“The Greatest Showman”) is still attached as the director, and the script is by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
What do you think?
Do we need more Disney live-action remakes or do you think Disney should focus on new content?
