With Avatar 2 set to hit theaters this year’s Christmas Season a number of fans of James Cameron and the franchise itself await to finally close the 13 year gap between films. Yes the opinion of the film itself is split with some enjoying the world and special effects while others disliked plot and story. But you can’t overlook the impact the film has had on Hollywood itself with advancements in CGI technology and a brief resurgence in 3D Films and is currently the highest grossing film of all time. Now not only will fans get their long awaited sequel, but they will also get to explore the world of Pandora in the video game space.
Disney has recently announced a partnership with Chinese game developer Tencent to develop an Avatar themed Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG). Currently known as Avatar Reckoning, the game will allow players to explore the world of Pandora and its inhabitants. Only a piece of concept art and logo have been shown, but it is believed that the events of Avatar 2 and possibly even Avatar 3 will come into play. The only major catch is that it will be exclusive to mobile phones.
The mobile phone market is huge in Asia, so the game is most likely meant to target that audience. Meanwhile the western mobile market also continues to grow as more and more. Young children consume media through phones. Recently Disney also announced a Disney themed M.O.B.A game Disney Melee Mania that will also be exclusive to phones. There is also the popular Disney Heroes: Battle Mode Turn Based RPG also on mobile. It is unknown if there will eventually be a PC port of the game but it would be a smart decision as MMOs usually tend to do better business on PC.
This, along with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora by Ubisoft will definitely excite any Avatar fan looking forward to the Sequel releasing this December.
