Disney Acquired Streaming Rights For Johnny Depp Film

Oh how the tables have turned. It seems Disney has acquired the streaming rights for the  film Minamata featuring Johnny Depp, and they plan to start running it on Hulu tomorrow July, 8. This is big step from the company that didn’t follow through with bringing the actor back for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as soon as unproven accusations were made by his ex-wife Amber Heard.

During the widely publicized trial Mr. Depp as asked if $300 million and a million alpacas would make him return to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and he said it wouldn’t. Now it seems Disney is trying to draw close to the actor again, since he won his defamation case.

The film Minamata was directed by Andrew Levitas. It was released in the United States but not until late last year, despite being out in 2020. The director felt that it was being unfairly maligned over Depp’s personal issues.

Now Disney is set to add the film to Hulu starting on July 8.

The Minamata description reads:

Three-time Academy Award nominee Johnny Depp plays celebrated war photographer W. Eugene Smith in a real life David vs Goliath story, pitting Smith against a powerful corporation responsible for poisoning the people of Minamata, Japan in 1971.”

I’m not sure if this is a step towards trying to win Mr. Depp back or his fans back, but it is interesting for sure.
