Director Matthew Vaughn Interested In Rebooting Star Wars

Modern-day Hollywood loves remaking/rebooting past films/franchises because they know that an already established audience that is familiar with said IP might take interest in a new interpretation. Sometimes, the remakes are good, while other times, they are inferior to the original.

But there are those few rare franchises who decide not to hit the reset button despite being decades old. Some of those include Mission Impossible, Rocky, and Fast & Furious. But one of the most popular long-running series is the Star Wars franchise. When Disney acquired the IP in 2012, they’d decided to do a sequel trilogy set 30 years after the first trilogy. Debatably, it didn’t work out as well as they had hoped.

With the future of the franchise seemingly in flux well-known film director Matthew Vaughn, best known for directing Kick Ass, X-Men: First Class and the Kingsman franchise, decided to give his thoughts on where he would take the series when he spoke with the Happy Sad Confused Podcast. He said:

For me, doing a Star Wars movie is to play with the characters that I love. So if they said to me, ‘Do you wanna reboot Star Wars and actually have Luke Skywalker, Solo, and Vader, and you do your own version of it?’ everyone would say you’re an idiot to try, but that would excite me.

That’d be fun, why not? Bond, you ask me who is going to play the next Wolverine, why are these characters so hallowed that, from 1977, you can’t redo it for a new audience? Star Wars is the Skywalker family. And that’s where, I think, they’ve gone wrong because they’ve forgotten. And they’ve done brilliantly in the TV world, but it needs an epic new film and that’s what I would do.

With the current state of the franchise seemingly uncertain due to the multiple mistakes of mishandling the 46-year-old franchise, perhaps the idea of a complete reset could lead to some sort of redemption and properly execute the vision George Lucas had before. But it is unknown if such a gamble would pay off.

What do you think? Should they start anew and remake A New Hope? Or should they leave well enough alone? Let us know.
