Deadpool & Wolverine Almost Had A Robert Downy Jr. Cameo

One of the most talked about things in the latest Marvel movie was the number of returning characters. Deadpool & Wolverine not only saw Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman return to their iconic characters but also characters like Chris Evans as Human Torch, Wesley Snipes as Blade, and Jennifer Garner as Electra.

Others are talking about those they wish had appeared in the film: Halle Berry’s Storm, David Hasselhoff’s Nick Fury, Thomas Jane’s Punisher, etc. But there was one cameo that many had hoped for that actually almost happened.

In the beginning of the movie, Deadpool visits Earth 616, the main timeline for the MCU. There, he meets with Happy Hogan, once again played by Jon Favreau, as he attempts to join the Avengers. But it was recently revealed that at least one other legacy MCU character was meant to appear, and it was a big one.

Two of the film’s writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, recently revealed in an interview with IndieWire that Ryan Reynolds had originally written in Robert Downy Jr.’s Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, appearing alongside Happy Hogan in the beginning.

Wernick began by saying, “We had wanted him to do a cameo. We had written that scene with Happy and Downey.

Reese then replied, saying, “Ryan Reynolds wrote the scene with both of them, so in the hopes we could get Downey. But he also wanted Favreau, because they’re a great combo, and they were all in the scene together.

Wernick chimed in again and said, “Behind the scenes, we didn’t know about Doctor Doom. And there’s no way he was going to do both. And then we said, ‘Oh, Downey doesn’t say no to Ryan Reynolds, does he? No one says no to Ryan Reynolds.’ And Ryan gave him the hard press. We wrote scenes, and Downey read the scenes, but what we didn’t know behind the scenes was this Doctor Doom thing.

While it would have been cool to see RDJ interact with Deadpool since both characters are known for their snappy comebacks, it is understandable that Marvel would want to move forward with Doctor Doom.

But what do you think? Should Tony Stark have appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine? Or is it best that he stayed dead this time? Let us know your thoughts.
