Capcom Hopes To Do More Crossovers With Marvel In The Future

This past weekend was the annual EVO fighting game tournament in Las Vegas. Beginning in 1996, EVO is one of the premier events where players from across the world get to show off their skills in various fighting games such as Street Fighter, TEKKEN, Mortal Kombat, The King of Fighters, and Super Smash Bros.

Aside from the different tournaments, many developers of these games like to make announcements. Be it an upcoming online update, the reveal of a new character, or even a new game, we also get to hear from the developers themselves on some of their potential future plans.

One of those people was Shuhei Matsumoto, a producer at Capcom who is attached to the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom collection that was announced this past June and is set to release later this year. Since the collection’s announcement, fans have speculated what it could mean for a possible new game in the series. When questioned, Matsumoto responded with:

The development team at Capcom has big dreams. Maybe there is an opportunity for a new Marvel vs Capcom game. Maybe there is an opportunity for a new Capcom-based SNK game.

I don’t know. But, if that were to happen, that would take some time and effort in order create and release those kinds of games, but the short-term with what we can do now is at least reintroduce these past legacy games to a new audience, to people who may not have the opportunity to play it, because it might not be out on modern or current platforms.

What we can at least do now is to show that, hey, these series exist. We love these games. We hope that you do too, and maybe in the future, if people get to familiarize themselves with these series, then there may be future opportunities to make bigger games.

The last entry in the Marvel vs. Capcom series was in 2017. Many fans have been hoping for something new for nearly a decade now. Hopefully, they will get something soon, be it a new MvC game, or, as Matsumoto mentioned, another crossover game with SNK, or maybe even a different company like Shonen Jump. Only time will tell.
