The Magic Kingdom will be down one E-ticket attraction for at least a year. Disney has announced that the popular Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction will shut down on January 1, 2025, and will not reopen until sometime in 2026 with “a little bit of new magic.”

It seems that Walt Disney World will finally get the upgrades to the ride system and sets that Disneyland received over a decade ago.
Rumors have been swirling that this could happen soon, as Coastal Steel Inc. has filed a permit for general construction on the attraction. The permit expires in August 2025.
Sadly, this means that for at least a year, guests can expect longer lines at other attractions at the Magic Kingdom as they file out into those areas.
I do have to wonder if Disney is also using this time to prepare for the “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” changes, address the water issues possibly impacting wetlands, and start laying the groundwork for the new Cars area that many fans don’t want.
No matter what this is going to be a bummer for a lot of guests. It’s a classic attraction.
I hope it comes back better than ever. It needs to after being closed for so long.
