The 1928 animated short film Steamboat Willie officially became public domain earlier this year many have decided to take advantage of the situation by doing their own interpretations. One of the more popular paths recently is using a public domain property for the horror genre. We all remember the amount of publicity Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey got when it was first announced.
While multiple horror-themed movies, both released and announced, have featured the classic mouse, from Mickey’s Mouse Trap to Steamboat Willie to The Return of Steamboat Willie, there have also been instances of him appearing in horror games such as Infestation Origins (formerly titled Infestation 88). Now, another game seems to be taking a darker take on the iconic mouse.
Bad Cheese is a psychological horror first-person shooter by Feardemic.
The game features a very hefty-looking mouse that resembles Mickey as he battles various creatures and monsters straight out of your nightmares. Many of these are rather distorted-looking characters of other classic characters. The gameplay is not too dissimilar to the recently released Mouse P.I. For Hire game.
“Step into the tiny paws of a mouse spending the weekend at home with a dysfunctional Dad while Mom’s away. Be on your best behavior and KEEP DADDY HAPPY, Hand-drawn art combined with a 16mm film-inspired aesthetic will make you feel like you’re watching a scary cartoon from the golden era of animation, Complete tasks, eat snacks, and navigate the ‘complicated family dynamic’, Experience the gruesome reality of a child-mouse trying to maintain a sense of normalcy in a not-so-normal household.“
The gameplay seems to mix classic horror FPS games like Doom and Blood with the hand-drawn look of other games like Cuphead. Other comparisons can be made to projects like Bendy and the Ink Machine.
While no specific release date has been given the developers have the game listed in Steam with a 2025 release window. Hopefully, when it releases, it will bring a unique experience to the horror fps genre.
What do you think? Does this look like an interesting idea for a game? Or are you tired of turning public domain classics into horror stories? Let us know your thoughts.
