Disney revealed the name and details of its Encanto attraction at Animal Kingdom. Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto puts riders in furniture assembled by Casita, features more than 50 animals vetted for Colombian accuracy, and carries no height requirement.
Disney’s Encanto ride finally has a name!
At the Horizons: A Carousel of Progress showcase at D23 on August 15, Disney Animation chief creative officer Jared Bush revealed the attraction is called Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto, coming to Tropical Americas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Why the no-height-requirement matters at Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom has a family problem, and this helps fix it.
The park’s headliners are mostly height-restricted. Families with small kids have had a short list: Na’vi River Journey, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and not much else.
Adding a fully-themed indoor dark ride with no minimum height gives Animal Kingdom a genuine everybody-rides attraction, which the park has needed for years.
You ride Casita’s furniture
The attraction takes place on Antonio’s gift day, the celebration where the youngest Madrigal receives his ability to talk to animals. You’re invited into the Casita as a guest at the party.
Once inside, you board a vehicle made of furniture that Casita has assembled to carry you through the house. Bush described the vehicles as lively and reactive, behaving like characters responding to the scenes around you, which is exactly how the house behaves in the film.
Bush said one of the more enjoyable parts of the project was building rooms of the Madrigal house that never appear in the movie. So this isn’t a greatest-hits tour of scenes you’ve watched. It’s new territory inside a familiar building.
The route ends upstairs in Antonio’s room, transformed into a rainforest.
More than 50 animals, checked by actual zoologists
Antonio’s room holds more than 50 animal species. Disney showed early looks at a few, including a toucan, a donkey, and a capybara getting a haircut.
And Walt Disney Imagineering partnered with Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment Team to confirm every animal in the attraction is accurate to Colombia. The company that runs an actual accredited zoo put its zoologists on a cartoon ride to make sure the wildlife checks out geographically.
That’s a very Animal Kingdom thing to do, and it fits the land’s larger approach. Imagineer Joan Hartwig led a research trip to Colombia, studying how local colors, materials, and structures respond to climate and terrain.
Three Madrigals are back to voice their roles
Disney also confirmed returning voice talent from the film.
Stephanie Beatriz returns as Mirabel, Jessica Darrow as Luisa, and Diane Guerrero as Isabela. Disney showed behind-the-scenes footage of the recording sessions.
“It’s sort of a perfect film to take all these colors and excitement out of and allow audiences to immerse themselves in it,” Darrow said of adapting Encanto into a ride.
The stated theme is that everyone belongs to the familia of living things, gift or no gift, which is a reasonable way to land an Encanto story for a park built around animals.
The rest of Tropical Americas is filling in
The land’s other pieces got updates too.
The carousel is officially El Carrusel de los Animalitos, with 22 hand-carved animals drawn from Disney and Pixar films. Some of the figures were on display at the Imagineering pavilion at D23 this weekend.
Tropical Americas is targeting a 2027 opening, with Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent. Between a thrill ride, a no-height-limit dark ride, a carousel, and a play area, Animal Kingdom is about to have somewhere to put the whole family at once. That hasn’t been true in a while.
