As many of you know, Disney’s “Snow White” is considered a box office flop. While it has only been out for a few days, the opening weekend is usually the biggest driver of future success with a film. If it isn’t dead yet, it will be when “Minecraft” comes out on April 4. The media has been running overtime with stories about how the movie failed; some blame conservatives, some blame liberals, but box office analysts say it isn’t a political thing.
Yesterday there was an article trying to paint the failure as a blue vs red, or Democrat vs Republican issue, making it a political talking point, but the issue is simply that the film isn’t that good.
I can tell you I’ve seen many liberals and conservatives talking about how mid the film was. It is failing because most of people are in agreement.
Box office analysts are saying political bias isn’t the cause.
According to an article from Business Insider, analysts disagree with the notion that “wokeism” and politics are destroying the performance of the film.
Here is what the analysts are saying,
David A. Gross, who runs FranchiseRe told the Business Insider,
I don’t think everybody just said, ‘It’s woke: Let’s not go. I just think it is a little bit confusing; it’s cross-signals. I think a lot of it goes back to the film — the reviews are not good. The movie isn’t completely satisfying to the audiences who are attending. That, also, has nothing to do with woke. The movie simply isn’t connecting creatively on the level of a big Disney hit.”
Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore offered this comment to the Business Insider about “Snow White,”
“If we went in a time machine and went back and there was no controversy, no issues with casting, on the political front — what may the movie have done? We’ll never know. Was it destined to be a $100 million opener? Probably not.”
Audiences and critics have balanced out to a 45-50% critical score and 74%-B- audience score. But all that doesn’t matter when the film can’t break even.
Gross did go on to point out that the film will drive other money-making streams like toy sales or Halloween costumes, but one could argue that “Snow White” already did that before the film. A little girl wearing a “Snow White” costume could be doing so because she loves the 1937 film not the 2025 one. But he is correct that the movies will make more money back from other verticals. However, “Snow White” better make back more money than most, because this film is hundreds of millions away from even breaking even.
While voices are pushing for “woke” and “anti-woke” narratives, the majority of people simply didn’t care enough to see the film.
