Recently, Disney replaced the static skeleton in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction in Disneyland with an animatronic that shifted between being human and turning into a skeleton.

The new animatronic used updated face-mapping and projection technology to change between “human” and “skeleton”. All while making some weird noises that many guests found annoying.
Actually, the entire animatronic annoyed a lot of longtime Pirates of the Caribbean fans.
But now it seems that the character has either been swapped out or is in a “B-mode” where it’s locked in as just a silent skeleton.
MouseInfo on X posted these clips/images.

It’s unclear if this is a different head or B-mode. But the face looks more like a physical skeleton than the original projected skeleton face.

Currently, it isn’t clear if the animatronic already broke or if Disney put it in static mode after so many complaints.
People are much happier.
“For the first time B mode is better than A mode 😭”- Finn 21
“I’m glad they factored in ‘b mode’ from the beginning. So smart!” – Brad Christian
“Keep New Animatronic from Breaking Down in a Week Challenge (Impossible)
But good. They should give him the EE Yeti treatment and keep him like that. (But actually fix the Yeti smfh) Or better yet, put the old skeleton back.” -Aoki Kha
“This is why Disney needs to stop flexing technology. They can’t handle it.” – Kate
“Wow! So much better! Here’s hoping they never turn it back on!!!” – Chandler Desrochers
“Just take it out and put the original back in” – JT
“good first step, now put the old skull back on” – Dragon D. Llama
“May it never turn on ever again” – cat
Again, it is unclear if the animatronic broke already or if it’s a deliberate choice by Disney.
The positive reception to the animatronic being in static skeleton mode has to sting given the money and time spent on it.
More expensive doesn’t always mean better, and some things should just be left alone unless it makes a lot of sense to change them.
